ASTROLABE
Because Without Astrolabe, Neither Maritime Nor Architecture Would Have Developed.
Nowadays, we use global positioning systems, or GPS in English abbreviation, to find our way. Thanks to this system, which works via multiple satellites, we can learn our exact location, direction and many other things. However, people in ancient times were able to meet some of these needs with a simple and beautiful device: Astrolabes…
A large pocket watch, about 15 cm in diameter Many things could be calculated with this simple device that resembled a watch. The astrolabe, which was used by astronomers, mathematicians, geographers and many other scientists, has maintained its popularity until recently for this reason.
It is known that astrolabes and astrolabe-like devices have been used since ancient times. However, no reliable sources have been found regarding these. According to written sources, the first astrolabe was discovered by Hipparchus, who lived in Iznik in the 2nd century BC. Hipparchus, who spent most of his life in Anatolia, is thought to have died on the island of Rhodes. This scientist, who spent his life interested in mathematics and astronomy, discovered the astrolabe and perhaps created the most important tool that changed the fate of the world. Because without the astrolabe, neither seafaring nor architecture could have developed. After Hipparchus, Theon of Alexandria explained how the astrolabe worked scientifically in 375 AD.
