The talismanic shirts, which were widely used by the Sultan and the dignitaries of the state, were worn under the caftan. The surface of the fabrics, which were specially bleached by calligraphers (fabrics that were insulated so that writings and forms could be transferred), were decorated with calligraphy and illumination as desired. The shirts, which have hundreds of examples in Topkapi Palace, commonly included compositions aimed at being successful, protecting from evil, preventing harm in war, rising in the ranks of the state, and protection from scorpions and snakes. Since they could not be washed, it is possible to see these shirts that have survived to the present day with the stains of that day.
