It is known that astrolabes and astrolabe-like devices have been used since ancient times. However, no reliable sources have been found regarding them. According to written sources, the first astrolabe was invented by Hipparchus, who lived in Iznik in the 2nd century BC. Hipparchus, who spent most of his life in Anatolia, is thought to have died on the island of Rhodes.
